Position Summary:Tidal Basin is seeking a Florida Permit Specialist to perform routine and complex administrative work in permitting for the County/City’s Building and Permitting Department. This position accomplishes a variety of administrative and clerical tasks such as analyzing, routing and tracking permit applications, filing correspondence, records maintenance, respond to telephone and written inquiries, and storage of documents to support office operations.
Job Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Assist applicants in completing construction permit applications including computing and collecting fees; assist contractors with the building plan application process and assist with licensing information.
- Route and track building plans through the plan approval process.
- Receive applications, process and issue permits in coordination with other affected City departments.
- Compose correspondence, reports, and memos independently or from general instruction.
- Research legal documents and property records within the City and other municipalities.
- Retrieve, schedule, and assign inspection requests.
- Issue and file contractor information, and other forms.
- Review residential and commercial building plans for initial application.
- Responsible for accurate record retention; scanning, filing, disposal of records.
- Research, collect, and compile data for administrative and operational reports; enter information into accounting and word processing computer applications and update computer files.
- Perform other work as assigned.
Skills and Competencies:
- Skill in the operation of modern office equipment, computers, and software, including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Skill in data entry and proofing of text and numerical entries.
- Ability to explain common codes and requirements for building permits to citizens, both in person and by telephone.
- Ability to maintain clear and accurate records and to make difficult arithmetical computations accurately.
- Familiarity with the construction trades and real estate.
- Ability to interpret construction plans, deeds, and site plans.
- Ability to answer questions and review permit applications in a customer service environment.
- Ability to make decisions and work without close supervision.
- Knowledge of Energov software, Building Self-Service Portal (CSS), Genesys, City specific software and Microsoft office.
- Ability to converse and write in both Spanish and English preferred.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- One (1) year of experience in an organization providing regulatory services involving permitting, licensing, or inspections, or in permit obtainment services involving regulatory agencies.
- One (1) year of experience in customer service duties involving frequent public contact
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel.
Experience/Education Preferred:
- Proficient with Salesforce
- Applicable Certifications
- Florida building official licensing
- Certified Emergency Manager (CEM)
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification
